Fats, Oil, and Grease
Here are some tips to keep your pipes clear of fats, oils and grease.
Do:
- Scrape food scraps into the trash or compost bin.
- Use a sink strainer to catch food scraps and empty it into the trash or compost.
- Pour grease into a can, let it cool and harden, then dispose of it in the trash.
- Minimize use of the garbage disposal.
- Wipe pots, pans, and dishes with dry paper towels before rinsing or washing, then discard the towels.
- Rinse dishes and pans with cold water before placing them in the dishwasher.
Don’t:
- Do not pour grease down sink drains or toilets.
- Do not use cloth towels or rags to remove grease, as it can enter the sewer when washed.
- Do not run water over dishes, pans, fryers, or griddles to wash grease down the drain.
Keep these items out of the sink:
- Grease
- Oil
- Salad dressing
- Cheese
- Cookies and pastries
- Sauces and gravy
- Meat fats
- Lard
- Dairy products
- Food scraps
