Fats, Oil, and Grease

Here are some tips to keep your pipes clear of fats, oils and grease.

Do:

  • Scrape food scraps into the trash or compost bin.
  • Use a sink strainer to catch food scraps and empty it into the trash or compost.
  • Pour grease into a can, let it cool and harden, then dispose of it in the trash.
  • Minimize use of the garbage disposal.
  • Wipe pots, pans, and dishes with dry paper towels before rinsing or washing, then discard the towels.
  • Rinse dishes and pans with cold water before placing them in the dishwasher.

Don’t:

  • Do not pour grease down sink drains or toilets.
  • Do not use cloth towels or rags to remove grease, as it can enter the sewer when washed.
  • Do not run water over dishes, pans, fryers, or griddles to wash grease down the drain.

Keep these items out of the sink:

  • Grease
  • Oil
  • Salad dressing
  • Cheese
  • Cookies and pastries
  • Sauces and gravy
  • Meat fats
  • Lard
  • Dairy products
  • Food scraps
